Master painter Zhou Liu Shi is one of China's living treasures. A distant disciple of Claude Monet, his work is an amalgam of Chinese and European traditions, especially of impressionism. He specializes in richly atmospheric landscapes, both oils and watercolors, begun in the field, and then refined in his studio.
One of Mr. Zhou's paintings was so stunning that when it was first shown in Beijing, many Chinese stood in line to photograph it: a painting of red flowers emerging from an early snow in Beijing. In another piece he uses blue-green shade, beloved of Chinese artists since the Tang Dynasty, as background for a branch of plum blossoms painted with a masterly blend of Chinese and western brushwork. He often combines pointillism with scrubbing, twisting strokes of the brush often used in China to depict gnarled branches and rugged mountains.
