Zhou Liu Shi: Chinese Impressionist Paintings

Master painter Zhou Liu Shi is one of China's living treasures. A distant disciple of Claude Monet, his work is an amalgam of Chinese and European traditions, especially of impressionism. He specializes in richly atmospheric landscapes, both oils and watercolors, begun in the field, and then refined in his studio.

One of Mr. Zhou's paintings was so stunning that when it was first shown in Beijing, many Chinese stood in line to photograph it: a painting of red flowers emerging from an early snow in Beijing. In another piece he uses blue-green shade, beloved of Chinese artists since the Tang Dynasty, as background for a branch of plum blossoms painted with a masterly blend of Chinese and western brushwork. He often combines pointillism with scrubbing, twisting strokes of the brush often used in China to depict gnarled branches and rugged mountains.

Oil On Canvas - 86 x 66cm

Zhou Liu Shi was born in 1924 in the Hai Chen district of Liaoning Province. He began professional portrait painting and artist promotion activities in 1940. He studied at the Zhan Choon Institute in Beijing from 1945 - 1946 as well as at Chung Hua Arts Academy, where he studied with renowned painters Wang Seng Liat and Kwan Poh Chuan. Further studies included National North East University in Shen Yang in 1946 - 1948 and Hua Pei University in 1949 specializing in stage design.
